User Analysis

User analysis is an effort to understand the distinguishing characteristics of users. Different researchers have had different ways of categorizing these differences, from Nielsen (1993)'s three dimensions of domain knowledge, application experience, and computing experience versus Booth (1989)'s five dimensions of background, usage constraints, user data, job characteristics, and personal traits.

Examining individual differences in between users is especially important to computing systems and online training systems, where individual differences could provide more information about how to keep people from failing out of training.
